GatherFor is partnering with Papertree to provide its Neighbor Teams with their own “bank account” that allows them to manage their own funds and spend them as long as everyone in the Neighbor Team approves the proposed uses of funds. Each month, after answering monthly reflection questions, GatherFor will deposit both a $300 discretionary fund and up to $500 in matching funds for each team’s susu.
Papertree is an organization creating the “community wallet” that allows members of a community to share resources. They are working with GatherFor to build a customized version of their platform for the use of GatherFor Neighbor Teams.
GatherFor is a nonprofit partner of Papertree, organizing neighbors into teams of 5-7 to support one another like families. These "Neighbor Teams" gather biweekly to share stories, define goals, and collaborate to achieve them. They've started businesses together, pooled funds to pay off bills, watched each other's kids, talked one another through mental health issues, held game nights and picnics, and more. GatherFor supports these Neighbor Teams in the form of financial resources, organizing requested workshops, providing an app for resource-sharing and coordination, and storytelling and discussion-based prompts. Each month, Neighbor Teams gather at a Town Hall to learn from each other and collaborate on a community-wide level, working toward building a "neighborhood safety net." You can learn more in this deck.
Once your Neighbor Team decides on a use of the $300, it can be spent by one or several members of the group who will request all or a portion of those funds for needed expenses. When this happens, all Neighbors will be sent a notification and asked to approve the proposed use of funds. If everyone approves it, the funds will be sent minus a small transaction fee. If the funds are not approved by everyone, the funds will not be sent. This will require that you all communicate and are engaged with one another. Similarly, once you all decide who will receive the susu in a given month and make your contributions, GatherFor will match the total. The person chosen to receive the susu that month can then request the funds, which will require all others approve the request for the money to be sent.
The central belief of GatherFor is that in community, we have what we need. We wanted to find a way for you all to make decisions and allocate funds through your own process and without requiring Teju or GatherFor to be in the middle. We think this is going to lead to more trust and more ownership of the experience.
